GLENN ADULT PROGRAM’S ESL CLASSES
English As a Second Language
After a few months off, the English Language Learners at the Adult Learning Center are back in the classroom and ready to learn!
There is a diverse group of individuals this year, with students from countries such as Mexico, Afghanistan, India and Cambodia, —just to name a few.
According to the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (NCELA), state-collected data for 2005 to 2006 shows more than five million students with limited English proficiency (LEP) enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, and 1,172,569 adults in state-run ESL programs in 2003 to 2004. Public schools are legally required to address the educational needs of non-English-speaking youth, assuring they can achieve academic success. Non-English-speaking adults voluntarily take English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to participate more fully in their communities.

The mission of the Glenn Adult Program’s English as a Second Language Department is to provide the language skills and opportunities to enrich the lives of our students by encouraging them to become lifelong learners and achieve personal success.

ESL classes assist students in developing reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation skills in a global society. English proficiency is encouraged through such events as off-site field trips, where students are encouraged to use their English language skills.
Our Field trips are fun and a great way to learn and use new words and phrases.
